HONORS 3 AT ANNUAL GALA

UNDER THE STARS

More than 500 academic, health care, business and community leaders joined together Oct. 18 at the annual Bright Lights, Shining Stars gala on Midwestern University’s Glendale campus. The black-tie-optional gala recognized and honored individuals for their commitment to helping others.

Harry and Rose Papp, partners, L. Roy Papp & Associates, were the joint recipients of the 2014 COMET (Community Outreach: Motivating Excellence for Tomorrow) Award, which recognizes outstanding individuals who have shown exemplary commitment to the community.

Harry Papp is the chairman of the board of directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and serves on the boards of the Phoenix Zoo, Arizona State University Foundation and Community Health Charities of Arizona. He also serves as president of Arizona Five Arts Circle and serves on the planned giving committees for the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum.

Rose Papp is a director of the Flinn Foundation and serves as treasurer and chair of the investment committee. She serves on the board of trustees and acts as treasurer for Phoenix Art Museum and the Desert Botanical Garden. Additionally, she is a member of Arizona Women’s Forum and the Arizona State University Foundation’s Women & Philanthropy.

The COMET Award was presented to the Papps by Kathleen H. Goeppinger, president and CEO of Midwestern University.

Goeppinger also presentd the 2014 Shooting Star Award, which recognizes a community leader for outstanding contributions to health care and education, to Dr. Steven Hansen, president and CEO of the Arizona Humane Society. Hansen has  nearly three decades’ experience in animal welfare. He has served as the chief operating officer for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and as the director of veterinary research and support for Wellmark International,

Bright Lights, Shining Stars also featured an outdoor reception, formal dinner, live entertainment and silent auction

Bright Lights, Shining Stars

Steve Chanen, president and CEO of Chanen Construction Company, was honored with the COMET (Community Outreach: Motivating Excellence for Tomorrow) Award at Midwestern University’s Bright Lights, Shining Stars gala Oct. 19. The award recognizes outstanding individuals who have shown exemplary commitment to the community.

Chanen Construction is one of the five largest builders in the Southwest. The company that has built all 35 buildings at Midwestern University’s Glendale campus and five on the Downers Grove, Ill., campus.

Chanen’s philanthropic ideals have led him and his company to contribute to many local organizations, including the Heard Museum, the Arizona Science Center, the Arizona Humane Society and the United Way of Phoenix, as well as to Midwestern University’s scholarship fund. He is a previous winner of the Arizona Humane Society’s Herberger Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Kathleen Goeppinger, MWU president and CEO, and Arthur Dobbelaere, MWU executive vice president and chief operating officer, presented the award to Chanen.

Bright Lights, Shining Stars is MWU’s annual benefit dinner, which raises money for student scholarships in all of MWU’s colleges.
