‘Bespoke’ Celebrates the Heard’s New Gallery, Crosswalk and Exhibition
There is much to celebrate at the Heard Museum. The American Indian Art and History treasure in downtown Phoenix has opened the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Gallery, its first new gallery in 11 years, as well as the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust Crosswalk, which connects two formerly separate upstairs areas.
The inaugural exhibition in the 7,000-square-foot gallery, “Beauty Speaks for Us,” showcases more than 200 American Indian artworks featuring masterworks from the museum’s permanent collection as well as from private Phoenix collections. It includes pottery, textiles, jewelry, basketry and more. The exhibition is presented by the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation.
On Feb. 9, more than 500 guests attended “Bespoke,” the opening night party. David Roche, museum director and CEO, welcomed guests, and Kahara Hodges sang a native blessing. Hodges is a member of the Diné Urban Voices, a program of the Phoenix Indian Center. Attendees toured the new space, and enjoyed delectables by M Catering and live entertainment by the Larry Redhouse Trio.
