Phoenix Art Museum Shows Award-Winning Photography

INFOCUS, the photography support organization of Phoenix Art Museum, announced that a major photographic work by emerging photographer Adam Katseff is now on display through September 2016, at the entrance to the museum’s Katz Wing. Katseff is the winner of the inaugural Sidney Zuber Photography Award, selected in 2015.

Named in honor of one of INFOCUS’s founders, this biennial award was created to recognize an emerging or early-career photographer who demonstrates artistic promise. Katseff received a cash prize of $5,000 and the opportunity to show his work at Phoenix Art Museum. The piece chosen for display, River XII, is a lacquered pigment print produced in 2015 and is from Katseff’s ongoing series River and Falls.

The competition was judged by Rebecca Senf, the Norton curator of photography at Phoenix Art Museum; Josh Chuang, then chief curator at the center for creative photography at the University of Arizona and April Watson, curator of photography at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City. The call for entry was widely responded to, bringing in 585 entrants from 47 of the United States, plus the District of Columbia, and included several artists from Canada, Austria, Norway and Taiwan, resident and working in the United States.

Adam Katseff is an early-career artist currently living and working in Palo Alto, Calif. He received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2006 and his MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University in 2012. As a student, he received both the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award and the Anita Squires Fowler Award.

Katseff’s work is gaining wider visibility through group and solo shows, including 2015 exhibitions at the Nevada Art Museum and the Sasha Wolf Gallery in New York City. Katseff teaches photography in the Fine Art department at Stanford University.
