Marine Corps Scholarship Dinner Honors the Late Bruce Halle

More than 500 guests attended the Arizona Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Dinner on May 19 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge. The eighth annual event, chaired by Dave English, Kathleen Winn and Elisabeth Wisthoff, raised more than $1 million to provide college scholarships to children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen. Thirty of the 88 scholarship recipients from Arizona attended the dinner.

The event paid tribute to two special individuals to the Marine Corps family, Bruce Halle and Lance Corporal Jacob Hug. The annual Semper Fidelis award in Arizona will be named in honor of Halle, the founder and CEO of Discount Tire, who passed away Jan. 4, 2018. The Jacob A. Hug Memorial Scholarship is endowed to provide scholarships to future generations of students, while honoring Hug’s ultimate sacrifice to his country.

Special guests included military guest of honor Karen Kelly; honorary chairs Stevie and Karl Eller; Diane and Dan Nelson, who were honored with the Bruce T. Halle Semper Fidelis Award for their commitment to community and country; and Sue Glawe, vice president of community relations at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, who was honored with the Service Above Self Award for her tireless work on behalf of deserving nonprofits in Arizona, including the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

The Phoenix Symphony brass quintet provided entertainment, and KFYI radio host Mike Broomhead emceed the evening. Generous sponsorship was provided by the Halle family, Carstens Family Funds, Eugene Cox and Hilda Mills, the Timothy Day Foundation and Nancy Hanley.
