Norman Saba passed away May 16, 2012. Norman was born Feb. 18, 1929, in Mesa, Ariz. He was the third of seven children born to Adele (nee Tibshraeny) and David Nehman Saba of Mesa.

Norman graduated from Mesa High School and was an All State high school football athlete. He attended Northern Arizona University and Arizona State College at Tempe (now known as Arizona State University). He graduated with a degree in education and also excelled in football. He recalled that it would be nothing to play a game on Friday night and then another the next day. He was a devoted Sun Devil.

Norman married his college sweetheart, Glennys (Terry) DeVere Paul in 1951. They were married for 60 cherished years.

He served in the National Guard and taught school. Norman left his teaching career to work in his family business, Saba's Western Stores. He worked side by side with his father, brothers and sisters. He and his family grew their business from three to eight stores throughout the Valley. Saba's is celebrating their 85th year in business.

Norman was very active in the Scottsdale Charros and Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. He had many passions including farming and gardening, which he enjoyed both commercially and as a hobby. He loved sharing the bounty of his crops with friends and family and was known affectionately as the "Watermelon King" for his deliciously sweet watermelons.

Norman was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He was active for many years in both Anglers United and Ducks Unlimited.

Norman, his family and friends spent many vacations on their annual Lake Powell houseboat trip. He instilled in his children and grandchildren a true love and devotion for family. Norman touched the lives of numerous people over the years and will be remembered for his love of life, and he will be greatly missed.

Kathryn (Kay) Jackson Fahys Brown

Kathryn (Kay) Jackson Fahys Brown passed away May 11, 2012. Kay graced so many lives with her caring and compassionate spirit and will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother who was adored not only by her family and friends but also by the many people whose lives she touched.

Kay was born Nov. 25, 1925, in New York City and was the youngest of three sisters. She was a graduate of Pratt Institute and Cornell Nursing School in New York City. She met her husband, Dr. Lee B. Brown, at New York Hospital while she was working as a nurse and Lee was a medical resident. They were married March 5, 1949, in New York City.

In 1960, Kay and Lee moved to Arizona where Lee became a well-known heart surgeon. Kay lived a fulfilled life raising her four daughters and was actively involved in their lives and in the lives of their friends. Kay participated in their school activities and supported their hobbies of horseback riding and tennis.

The home she and her husband designed on Royal Palm Circle, affectionately known as the "Brown Compound," was the hub of gatherings for family and friends. Additionally, Kay enjoyed painting, playing tennis and bridge with her friends, and was an avid animal lover.

Kay also participated in numerous community organizations. She was involved in the formation of the Crisis Nursery during its early years of fundraising events. She was a board member of the Arizona Horse Exhibitors Association and was the chairperson of the Scottsdale Heart Committee in the 1960s.

Michael Davidov, M.D.

Dr. Michael Davidov died peacefully May 15, 2012, following a long illness. He was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on Feb. 23, 1934, the only child of Kosovka and Evgenije Davidov.

He received his medical degree and completed a residency in medicine with an emphasis on surgery at the University of Belgrade, School of Medicine, becoming an assistant professor. In 1964, because he refused to join the Communist Party in Yugoslavia, he was prohibited from practicing medicine, at which point he escaped to the United States.

He repeated his medical internship and completed a residency in cardiology and a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiology at Georgetown University, School of Medicine. He went on to become a professor of cardiology at Georgetown and was nationally and internationally known for his pioneering work in hypertension and congestive heart failure. He also had one of the largest cardiology and multispecialty medical practices in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Although he served on and chaired many boards, received many honors, including being elected to the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C., and published more than 70 peer reviewed papers, his most treasured possession was the presentation of the Vicennial Medal for 20 years of excellence in teaching from Georgetown University.

In 1996, after having two heart attacks, he was forced to retire. He and his wife, Anne, retired to Troon Village in Scottsdale, Ariz. Although he missed his students and patients, he made many wonderful friends and for 10 years enjoyed a wonderful life. He enjoyed just being "Michael."

Giverny Blooms in the Bronx

The market for Claude Monet’s paintings faltered in the 1880s but came back the following decade, when he started producing series like the haystacks and the Rouen Cathedral facades. He began to make a lot of money, enough to finance his own private utopia in Giverny in northern France, where he devoted himself to flower gardening with as much industry and creativity as he did to painting. From 1883 to the end of his life in 1926, initially as a renter, he presided over his aesthetic Eden, his paradise for the innocent eye, and there created some of the most adventurous works on canvas of the early 20th century: the enveloping, hallucinatory paintings of lily pads floating on the surface of the pond he excavated for them.

In 1953, after the early successes of Soviet espionage demonstrated just how difficult and dangerous the cold war would become, the Central Intelligence Agency began a top-secret program called MKUltra. It included exotic projects that decades later provided much critical fodder for commentators and comedians: exploding cigars, poison-laced toothpaste, hallucinogenic serums. And as we learn in a video interview with professional spies at the exhibition “Spy: The Secret World of Espionage,” opening on Friday at Discovery Times Square, it even included the hiring of a magician, John Mulholland, as a C.I.A. consultant.

The Barnes Foundation’s move from suburban Philadelphia to the center of the city caused art lovers lots of worry.

Devotees of this great polyglot collection, heavy with Renoir, Cézanne and Matisse, which the omnivore art shopper Albert C. Barnes amassed between 1912 and his death in 1951, were appalled by the idea. Barnes spent years obsessively arranging his installation cheek-by-jowl in the mansion in Lower Merion, Pa., that he built for the purpose and opened in 1925, and he stipulated that, after he died, it should remain exactly as it was.

In its month-long February Charity Program, Saks Fifth Avenue raised more than $1.1 million in charitable contributions nationwide. The Phoenix store raised more than $80,000 for local charities, placing it among the top three stores in the nation.

During the charity program, Saks gave 5 percent of all registered purchases made with a registered Saks Fifth Avenue credit card back to charity. Customers selected their favorite local charity from Saks Fifth Avenue’s roster of local organizations. Registration was one step at point of sale that linked the customer account with their chosen charity.

Because the Biltmore Fashion Park store was among the top three, it was able to give 10 percent of its registered purchases to local charities. The store partnered with TGen, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, Valle del Sol, the ASU Foundation and the American Heart Association.

The Digital Lost-Dog Poster (Your Smart Phone)

Bonnie is missing" blared the e-mail subject line. A 2-year-old female pit bull weighing 55 pounds, with gray and white markings, she was last seen on the corner of Maple Avenue and Myrtle Street in my community, wearing a chain collar. “I am asking for your help in finding my lost dog,” her owner pleaded.

I immediately felt a pang of anxiety. And then one of confusion. Exactly what was I supposed to do with this information? It appeared on my smart phone because I recently got a new puppy and, while Riley was under the ether being spayed, the veterinarian’s assistant recommended inserting a chip for identification purposes.

For years, there have been so many Michelin-starred restaurants along the Cote d’Azur, the glamorous seaside strip known to Anglophones as the French Riviera, that the company’s guidebook includes an inset map of the region to display them legibly. Today, though, it’s not fancy dining rooms with tuxedo-wearing waiters and vertiginous tariffs that are the stars, but small, casual homey places with chefs who showcase the region’s superb produce as part of brief and regularly changing menus – at reasonable prices.
