Arizona Historymakers Gala XII

The Historical League hosted its 12th annual Historymakers Gala on March 4 at the Arizona Biltmore. The stellar lineup of six honorees drew 380 guests to the substantive program.

  • Ed Beauvias, founder of America West Airlines, was cited for putting Phoenix on the aviation map and thereby contributing to the rapid growth of Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport.
  • Ranch owner Wink Crigler, Greer, has taught school, written and published two cowboy lore books, supports community causes and has a strong interest in conservation initiatives.
  • The Honorable Jon Kyl was recognized for his service to Arizona and the nation in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate.
  • The Papp FamilyMarilyn, Rose and Harry – were recognized as philanthropists and community leaders. Their generosity has benefited causes from the arts to education and the zoo. Marilyn Papp, Harry’s mother, passed away shortly after being named a 2017 Historymaker.
  • Neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Spetzler has served as director of Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center since 1985. Under his leadership, the institute has become an internationally recognized center of neurological excellence.
  • Warren H. Stewart, Sr. is a minister and community activist. His leadership helped establish an Arizona state holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During his ministry, Stewart has campaigned for many community causes.

Patricia Faur and Deborah Hester co-chaired the “Western Black Tie” evening. Stan Sorenson & Jazz Prose entertained during the cocktail hour, and the Pete Pancrazi Duo provided dinner music. 12 News anchor and meteorologist Caribe Devine served as the evening’s emcee.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona was the title sponsor, and SRP was the presenting sponsor. Barrow Brain and Spine sponsored the reception.

Funds raised at the gala support the continuation of the Historymakers Recognition Program and help underwrite educational programs, exhibits and capital improvement at the AZ Heritage Center.
