Fall into a Magical Story of Eternal Love
Ballet Arizona opens its 2016-17 season with La Bayadère, Oct. 27 – 30, 2016, with the Phoenix Symphony at Symphony Hall.
Staged by Ballet Arizona Artistic Director Ib Andersen, the ballet is set in an exotic India of the past and recounts the story of Nikiya, a temple dancer (La Bayadère); her lover, Solor; and the vengeful Gamzatti who keeps them apart. The lovers are wrenched apart by twists of fate and doomed by uncontrollable vengeance.
The third act of La Bayadère, the Kingdom of the Shades, showcases the entire female corps de ballet in white tutus, executing a sequence of synchronized and seamless choreography that often steals the show.
The costumes and sets were designed by Sergiy Spevyakin in 2010 for Boston Ballet‘s production of La Bayadère. Bright colors, rich fabrics and dazzling designs create an exceptional and diverse visual feast. Spevyakin drew inspiration from the customary saris, robes, scarves and turbans native to different parts of India.
The music was created by Austrian composer of ballet music Léon Minkus.
